Bayside Power Poll: Week 1

September 3, 2017

Tough to gauge the bottom end of things with the Decatur win over Arcadia not knowing much about Arcadia but 44 points in Week 1 for a team that did not get a win until Week 10 last year is a good start. Cambridge played a much tougher opponent than Easton, I still think Easton now is slightly better but may change later in the year. Wicomico played the #1 team so that’s why they don’t slide but Week 2 will be telling for a lot of teams and where they stand with Wicomico-Decatur, Parkside-North Caroline and Colonel-Snow Hill.

1...North Caroline (1-0)-The Bulldogs rolled Wicomico 44-0 as they got many contributions including RB David Bailey who scored 2 TDs, RB Zach Smith with a TD and QB Cody Pepper had 2 TD passes. There was no overlooking the Indians to their next opponent, which should be a good one.

Next Game: Friday vs. Parkside

2...Kent Island (1-0)-The Bucs had little trouble shutting out Snow Hill 50-0. Riverdale Baptist transfer Trent Jackson went 12-18 for 187 yards adding balance to usually a run heavy offense. Sean Mooney had 5 catches for 87 yards. The defense was stifling as always pitching a shutout.

Next Game: Saturday at JM Bennett

3...Queen Anne’s (1-0)-The Lions went on the road and defeated Cambridge-SD 28-0. The game was 6-0 before a very late TD put them up 14-0 at the half. Ryan Mueller rushed for 120 yards and 2 TDs, S Garrett Murray had two interceptions. The Lions went with Senior QB Tyler Bonkowski but Freshman QB Syrus McGowan did see some time late.

Next Game: Friday at Easton

4...Parkside (1-0)-The Rams had little trouble defeating Kent County and pitching the sixth shutout of the 7 games in the Conference Week 1, winning 42-0. RB Nayel Oge had over 150 yard rushing and 2 TDs. Parkside held the Kent County offense to 41 yards on 29 plays.

Next Week: Friday at North Caroline

5...Easton (1-0)-The Warriors took care of business thanks to 5 TD passes by QB Mason Ledford and 3 RB Conor Butler rushing TDs defeating Washington 54-0. The Warriors and Jags had not played since 1996 (Ref: The Star-Democrat)

Next Week: Friday vs. Queen Anne’s

6...Cambridge (0-1)-The Vikings fell to Queen Anne’s 28-0. Two interceptions and costly penalties did in Cambridge. The score was just 6-0 until a late Lions TD in the first half. Despite the score the Vikings defense had some good series in the game and the offense was able to move the ball at times.

Next Week: Friday vs. Woodbridge (Bridgeville, DE)

7...Kent County (0-1)-The Trojans in the post Marcquan Greene era fell to Parkside 42-0. The offense was held to under 50 yards and the defense had a tough time stopping a tough ground game from the Rams who are 1 student short of being a 3A school whereas Kent is a 1A.

Next Game: Friday at Washington

8...JM Bennett (1-0)-The Clippers got a 42 yard FG from K Steve Oscar to defeat Colonel Richardson 10-8. Bennett who had some success in the air but none on the ground was helped by Colonel’s turnovers.

Next Game: Saturday vs. Queen Anne’s

9...Wicomico (0-1)-The Indians were shutout by one of the Bayside’s best in North Caroline 44-0. Penalties, mistakes and a lack of defense hurt the Indians in addition to what the Bulldogs were able to do on the field.

Next Game: at Stephen Decatur

10...Colonel Richardson (0-1)-The Colonels fell to JM Bennett 10-8. The Colonels committed 6 turnovers (4 fumbles and 2 interceptions) offensively which negated them from scoring despite moving the ball.

Next Game: Friday at Snow Hill

11...Stephen Decatur (1-0)-The Seahawks defeated Arcadia (VA) 44-0 in Head Coach Bob Knox’ return to the sidelines after taking a year off for a personal family health issue.

Next Game: Friday vs. Wicomico

12...Washington (0-1)-The Jaguars fell to Easton 54-0 and while it will be an uphill challenge for the Jags this was one of the more talented skill position teams in the Conference.

Next Week: Friday vs. Kent County

13...Snow Hill (0-1)-The Eagles fell to Kent Island 50-0 one of the Bayside Conference’s best. It should not get any tougher than that for Snow Hill which at least boasts much better numbers this year with 30 players which is anywhere from a 15-20 player improvement from times last year where they had to forfeit a game because of low numbers. Next Game: vs. Colonel Richardson
