2A East Playoffs:
#1, #1 seed, North Caroline (10-0) vs. #2, #4 seed Kent Island (8-2)-7pm-This is the Overtime Live Game of the Week on 94-3 WINX-FM & sfmsports.net, Pre-Game 6:45pm, Kickoff at 7pm. Listen to the game HERE
This is what I wrote in the What We Learned Blog from last week if Kent Island faces North Caroline again:
If the Bucs play NC again they will have to disguise their loaded box approach and bate Pepper into throwing into a crowded area by dropping guys back into coverage after showing a loaded box to stop the run. Conversely they will need to blitz secondary players to stop the run approaching their run game from all angles to keep them guessing where the pressure point is.
They will also have to mix their secondary pass coverage and occasionally come off man and play zone where they can although that may be easier said than done. At the end of the day your resources have to be aimed more at the run. Kent Island must also force turnovers themselves.
If their run game cannot get on track and they become one dimensional that is problematic but it’s more problematic if you get down by a lot early. If the defense can keep it close, than at least it’s not always an obvious pass situation when you go back to throw. (Added in this week: They are not likely to run all over North Caroline but they have to run the football just well enough to keep Caroline off balance and they will have to stay at it even in tough times sledding on the ground)
Finally the Bucs will need to win the special teams phase via field position and maybe most importantly try and create a turnover on their own. It’s not likely you will get two but your best chance still probably comes against the pass.
Don’t expect radical changes by Kent Island, they will still look to establish the run game but it will be a chess match by the two teams. North Caroline is known for very good second half adjustments.
At the end of the day North Caroline still presents too much to have to contend with and I don’t see this Bulldog team who has a mission to exceed what happened in 2015 at home losing even if it should be close.
Again the biggest key will be trying to get an early jump start on Kent Island to put them away early. You can’t assume it will be 21-0 again at the half but Caroline should win this game by a couple of scores.
1A East Playoffs:
#6 (#3 seed) Cambridge-SD (6-4) at #2 Seed Bo Manor (6-4)-7pm-The Vikings have returning seniors at three skill positions in QB, RB and WR which is a big help no doubt. Bo Manor has scored less points than Cambridge but has given up less. Both teams are coming off of big wins. This is a game where playing the likes of a Woodbridge out of the Henlopen Conference in Delaware gets them ready for a game like this. It certainly is a winnable one for the Vikings but I lean the home team slightly.
#8 (#4 seed) Colonel Richardson (6-4) at #1 Seed Havre De Grace (9-1)-7pm-The Colonels have had a really good year and are in the playoffs for the first time since 2004 but they are facing a very good Havre De Grace team who has several quality victories including one over 3A C. Milton Wright that also has made the playoffs. Colonel while having played Cambridge tough still does not have that quality victory and while they will fight and be competitive will eventually wear down. Colonel with low numbers and already without Mr. Everything Darion Speller just won’t have enough.
3A East Playoffs:
#4 (#1 seed) JM Bennett (7-3) vs. #4 Seed Atholton (6-3)-7pm-The Clippers are back in the playoffs for the second time in three years. This is the first home playoff game for Bennett in 25 years. By the numbers Atholton scores only 10 points a game on average but only gives up 9 points a game. The Raiders come in on a 2 game losing streak. Atholton is athletic with a very good defense and their offense is of the spread variety where they emphasize the pass. This one looks like it will come down to who has the better defense which the Raiders definitely do. Bennett does have the advantage in special teams. Bennett has gotten behind in games a lot this year which they can ill afford to do in playoff games. While I am certainly all behind #Gibsonstrong, I have to lean Atholton here slightly. I certainly hope I am wrong though.
