Bayside Playoff Picks

November 17, 2017

Friday:

2A East Playoffs:

#2, #4 seed, Kent Island (9-2) at #2 seed Harford Tech, Bel Air (11-0)-7pm-This is the Overtime Live Game of the Week on 94-3 WINX-FM & sfmsports.net, Pre-Game 6:45pm, Kickoff at 7pm. Listen to the game https://www.sfmsports.net/overtime-live

Kent Island is on a roll having won two straight in big fashion including last week’s 33-29 thriller at #1 Bayside, #1 Seed North Caroline in the playoffs. The Bucs have been a somewhat forgotten team with all the attention that those of us in the media have given to North Caroline. I am guilty of that as well but two things on that, first it was deserved given their 10-0 regular season record, second I did have Kent Island ranked as #2 all year. The Bucs have been playing inspired football and bring it all to the table. They can run, they can throw and they can play defense. The Bucs have a swagger, they are tough and hungry.

With all due respect to Harford Tech, this will not be any tougher a team no matter their record than what Kent Island has seen this season. Mind you they have faced # 1 Bayside, Top 25 in the State of MD-North Caroline two of the last three weeks, rival and 7-3 Queen Anne’s in Week #10 and Top 25 in the State of MD, Oakdale (Frederick) in Week #8. Kent Island has played a tougher than Harford Tech. Elkton was without 4 players last week including their star RB so the 35-0 score does not tell the whole story and might be a bit overstated of their success.

You nonetheless have to respect any team that is undefeated and Tech to their credit have nice wins over Tower Hill School (out of Northern Delaware in the playoffs in D-II), C. Milton Wright (3A Playoff Team) and Bo Manor who is still in the playoffs in the 1A.

Tech is undersized but fast and quick. The Cobras run a 5-3 and are aggressive on defense. They put two DTs on the center shading each side causing some blocking assignment issues and to free up their MLB who is also their FB, #28 Kyle Cicone, their Mr. Everything. The defense relies heavily on the LBs and they over play the strength of the offense. They have a pretty quick NT.

They run an I offense with some spread mixed in. #5 Jalen Dangerfield is a quick RB who also plays OLB. They can throw but it’s mostly a big play throwing offense. The teams thrives on capitalizing on other team’s mistakes.

If Kent Island comes out and plays the inspired ball they did against North Caroline and plays disciplined on defense so as to not allow Dangerfield or some of the others to get outside of them in the run game too much they ought to be able to win this game. The Bucs should be able to control the line of scrimmage in the run game, capitalize off their aggressiveness and bring a passing attack to keep them off their heels. The defense’s number one job is stop the run and not give up the big play in obvious pass situations. They cannot come out flat or turnover the ball early and give the Cobras momentum. Harford Tech has not faced too much adversity this year so by getting them down early and giving them some, it will quiet the crowd and put them in unchartered territory. You never ever especially in the playoffs and with an undefeated team, take any opponent for granted but Kent Island should be up by a few TDs in the 4th quarter. Kent Island wins.

Playoff Record Last Week: 4-1

Regular Season: 57-14
