Power Poll: Final Regular Season

November 9, 2018

Explaining the Poll: North Caroline completes another unblemished year. With Kent Island’s win over Queen Anne’s and Cambridge over Easton and Wicomico lopsided loss to JM Bennett some definite movement in the middle. The very top and bottom stay the same. I was close to tying Kent Island and Queen Anne’s but since its final poll, I thought better of it.

1...North Caroline (10-0)-The Bulldogs defeated in county rival Colonel Richardson 48-7 to finish off another perfect season. RB Joey Bildstein had three touchdown runs in the win. The Bulldogs have gone 20-0 in the last two years and are 38-2 in the last four years.

Next Game: Friday-2A East Playoffs vs. #3, #4 seed Parkside-7pm

2...JM Bennett (8-2)-The Clippers routed Salisbury city rival Wicomico 35-0 to win their second straight Salisbury Championship. QB Brandon Scholl had three touchdown passes. The Clippers program is rolling making the playoffs three out of the last four years. Bennett is 30-22 in their last five years, 27-15 in the last four years.

Next Game: Friday-3A East Playoffs vs. #4 seed Long Reach-7pm

3...Parkside (8-2)-The Rams routed Washington 66-6 last Thursday night. The Rams are going to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. This is the 5th consecutive winning season for Parkside, the most by a south team in that time. Parkside’s defense was the big story of the year playing a lot better than in previous years as did their special teams. Offensively a power attack had served them well on the ground.

Next Game: Friday-2A East Playoffs at #1, #1 seed North Caroline-6:30pm

4...Wicomico (6-4)-The Indians were blanked by Salisbury city rival JM Bennett 35-0 ending any playoff chances. Five turnovers plagued Wi-Hi in the game. Inconsistency brought on by mistakes like turnovers hurt Wicomico who could look good one week and not so good the next week. They still won more than they lost and had two more wins than last year. It was their first winning season since 2014.

Next Game: Season Over

5...Cambridge-SD (7-3)-The Vikings defeated rival Easton 47-28 securing a #2 seed in the 1A East Playoffs. RB Khalik Beasley ran 20 times for 256 yards and 3TDs in the win. New head coach in Gavin Parker but same consistent program; winning the 1A Division again and going to the playoffs. They have not had a losing season since 2006.

Next Game: Friday-1A East Playoff-vs. #3 seed Perryville-7pm

6...Kent Island (5-5)-The Bucs defeated rival Queen Anne’s in ‘The War on the Shore’ to win the Chesapeake Cup 28-23. Kent Island broke a 5-game losing streak with the win. RB Ke’Juan Johnson had 224 yards on 27 carries in the win. The Bucs streak of 10 consecutive years to the playoffs was ended earlier in the season. Low numbers, injuries and youth all contributed to a tough year for Kent Island.

Next Game: Season Over

7...Queen Anne’s (4-6)-The Lions fell on the road in the ‘War on the Shore’ to rival Kent Island 28-23. Hassan Biggus had 200 yards rushing on 12 carries in his final game of the year. The loss of Defensive Coordinator Al Waters, multiple coaching changes on that side of the ball, lack of speed and a slow start for the offense all contributed to a losing season.

Next Game: Season Over

8...Easton (4-6)-The Warriors fell on the road rival Cambridge-SD 47-28. QB Ryan O’Connor threw for 212 yards and 2 TDs but also had 2 interceptions. The defense gave up 421 yards rushing. Easton lost several close games this year and easily could have been playoff bound. However, Easton had issues defensively early in the year in not closing out games and giving up scores. Penalties also were an issue. The offense was explosive and thrived in the passing game with So. QB Ryan O’Connor who threw 23 TD passes.

Next Game: Season Over

9...Colonel Richardson (5-5)-The Colonels fell to in-county rival North Caroline 48-7. Despite the loss Colonel makes the 1A East playoffs for a second straight year.

Next Game: Friday-1A East Playoffs at #1 seed Havre De Grace-7pm

10...Stephen Decatur (3-7)-The Seahawks defeated in county rival Snow Hill 61-0 to get their first win since early September. Devin Waters and Ty’Quan Briddell each had two touchdowns. It was another disappointing season for the Seahawks who now have had five consecutive losing seasons.

Next Game: Season Over

11...Kent County (3-7)-The Trojans defeated Patterson Mill (Harford County) 14-8 in a non-conference game in a big rain storm. The Trojans under new Head Coach David Boyle with three wins this season had a chance at winning 5 with close losses to Kent Island and Concordia Prep.

Next Game: Season Over

12...Washington (1-9)-The Jags fell on the road on Thursday night to Parkside 66-6. It was another tough year for Washington who is 10-40 over the last 5 years. They did boast decent numbers by their standards with 29 players. A combination of poor offense and defense was at issue this year.

Next Game: Season Over

13...Snow Hill (0-10)-The Eagles were blanked on the road to in-county rival Stephen Decatur 61-0. Snow Hill has lost 12 straight games going back to last year.

Next Game: Season Over
